Training and Education to Accelerate Discovery
The Workforce Development Foundation for Discovery is transforming the approach to education and training that is required to accelerate the pace of discoveries in the life sciences and the rapid translation of these discoveries into clinical practice that results in improved patient outcomes. Workforce development is designed to enhance the development of future faculty members and to reengineer the training of future investigators in each step of clinical research, from the laboratory bench or basic population science research to the bedside and finally to practice in the community.
The training core brings together faculty and trainees from basic science and clinical departments, the graduate and medical schools, academia, health care delivery, and the biopharmaceutical industry.
Programs, Degrees, & Certificates
Workforce development offers a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) degree, which provides classroom and mentored research experience in clinical research, preparing its trainees for careers in clinical investigation, in academic medicine and the allied health sciences. The curriculum of the MSCI focuses on the theories, models, methods, and tools used by investigators who conduct bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-community translational research.
The foundation also offers three Graduate Certificates which provide focused training and credentialing for faculty and individuals at all levels in an emergent area of health services research. The certificates allow trainees and investigators to be aptly prepared to conduct the highest quality research possible and effectively compete for external funds.
The K12 Mentored Career Development Scholar Program prepares trainees to be competitive investigators capable of gaining extramural funding for their clinical research projects. The program is designed to support a mentored research experience for fellows and junior faculty members at the University of Utah School of Medicine and other health science departments.
