Profile

The Utah CTSI had the privilege of talking to Kevin Shah, MD - a former Community & Academic Partnership Pilot (CAPP) Program awardee. We thank him for taking the time to answer our questions about his research on cardiovascular risk within the South Asian population.

What is your research area?

Improving awareness and understanding strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk among South Asian adults.

What makes it relevant?

South Asians represent approximately 25% of the world's population but also disproportionately represent roughly 60% of the worlds heart disease patients. They suffer from premature and aggressive cardiovascular disease in comparison to other ethnic populations.

How does it help the world?

Our efforts demonstrate the efficacy of partnering with community centers to increase screening efforts and heart disease risk reduction strategies with South Asians which are culturally sensitive and effective.

How has the CTSI helped you?

The CTSI helped by providing the tools including the Community Collaboration & Engagement Team (CCET) as well as the funding opportunity through the Community & Academic Partnership Pilot (CAPP) Program to launch our efforts to improve cardiovascular disease for South Asians locally.
