Comprehensive Research Informatics
The Biomedical Informatics Core (BMIC) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) provides comprehensive clinical and translational research informatics support to researchers through a variety of means, including education, consultation, and service delivery. Biomedical informaticians are embedded with each of the four arms of the CTSI, ensuring integration of informatics expertise across all CTSI activities. Additionally, a team of informatics and IT professionals provides support services to individual scientists. A major goal of the BMIC is to advance innovation in clinical and translational research informatics and advance the science of performing research.
BMIC contributes both formal and informal education to support curriculum development of informatics competencies among the varied personnel of clinical and translational research teams. BMIC contributes coursework, lectures, and seminars in the University of Utah's Department of Biomedical Informatics and the CTSI Master of Science for Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program. Informal training and presentations are always available upon request from research groups, divisions and departments.
Innovation is a key priority of the BMIC, and information technology is critical to advancing the conduct of clinical and translational research. However, the full potential of information technology has not been realized in contemporary science. BMIC aims to leverage technology along with informatics methods to advance cohort identification, recruitment, biospecimen management and other critical aspects of clinical and translational science. Ongoing areas of research and innovation include:
- Data Federation and Aggregation
- Biorepository development
- Centralized research/resource planning and management
- Recruitment
- Improving quality and information management related to participant consent
