Application Information
The Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) is a post-graduate program intended for individuals who seek training to pursue research with a clinical emphasis and have or are studying toward an MD, DO, DMD or PhD degree. The program is also open to individuals with engineering or business degrees who are involved in health care systems and those with doctoral degrees in clinical areas, such as nursing, physical therapy, and pharmacy.
All application materials (letters of recommendation, transcripts, and English proficiency test scores) must be submitted by the deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Please be sure to read all the application requirements below and upload all documents to your online application PRIOR to submitting your application.
Requirements

- Under Area of Interest select the appropriate track
- Bench to Bedside (Med into Grad/Track 1)
- Clinician Scientist (Track 2)
- Unofficial transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework.
- Official transcripts will be required upon admission into the program.
- NOTE: Transcripts must be sent from the awarding institution directly to the University of Utah Office of Admissions to be considered official.

- International students must submit demonstration of English proficiency. Approved tests and required test scores are set by the Office of Graduate Admission.

- Two letters of recommendation in support of your application. These should be from two professors/faculty mentors who are familiar with your research and/or academic success.
- Clinician Scientists must also upload a statement agreeing to protected time from their Division Chief.
- The non-refundable graduate application fee is $55 for domestic applicants and $65 for international applicants. The application fee must be paid to consider your application complete.
- Meet admission requirements as set by the Graduate School at the University of Utah
- Graduate applicants to the University of Utah are students who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree at either a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country.
- At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, applicants must have received a post-baccalaureate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or above.
International GPAs are evaluated by the Office of Admission and converted to a 4.0 scale.

- Apply for I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. An I-20 is necessary to apply for an F-1 student visa through a U.S. Consulate abroad or to maintain F-1 student status in the United States. The University of Utah begins processing I-20 Certificates of Eligibility for students after they have been admitted.

- Apply for F-1 Student Visa. Once you have received your I-20, you can apply for your F-1 visa.
- Complete Online Visa Application
- Pay the application fee in the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-901. Note: Only students with a new SEVIS number are required to pay the fee.
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee
- Print the receipt as proof of payment for your visa interview.
- Upload required photo
- Schedule a visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate (excluding citizens of Canada and Bermuda). Bring all required documents with you to the interview, including:
- Passport
- Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DA-160)
- Application Fee payment receipt - I-20 Certificate of Eligibility
- Additional documents may be required.
- Review instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate where you will apply.
- Send an email to msci_admin@lists.utah.edu to let us know you are interested in applying prior to submitting your application. This is especially important for Track 1 (Med into Grad) students who are currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Utah.

The Master of Science in Clinical Investigation Program offers graduate level courses to faculty, student trainees, and community members interested in learning about core competencies of clinical research and investigation including study design, research implementation, statistical approaches, the responsible conduct of research, and more. Requirements
- Send an email to msci_admin@lists.utah.edu to let us know which courses you are interested in enrolling in.
- Complete the University of Utah online application
- Select “Non-Degree Seeking” in the student type section and indicate that you intend to take Graduate-level courses.
- Complete required sections.
- Arrange for official transcripts to be sent to the University of Utah Office of Admissions.
- A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university.
- At least a 3.00 or higher undergraduate/graduate weighted mean GPA.
- International students must have an H visa to be eligible for the certificate program if a graduate program is not indicated. F1 or J1 visas are only acceptable if the student is in a graduate program. Students who hold an F1 or J1 visa and do not have a graduate program are not eligible for certificate programs.
Non-degree seeking applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Applications are due:
- Fall – June 1

- Spring – January 1
Tuition
Tuition costs are dependent upon residency and the number of credits enrolled in per semester.
University of Utah tuition information
All students (degree seeking and non-degree seeking) are charged the resident tuition rate during summer semesters, including international students. Tuition rates are subject to change.
University of Utah faculty and staff are eligible for tuition reduction after six months of full-time (.75 FTE or greater) employment at the rate of 50% of the applicable resident or non-resident base tuition rate. Medical Residents and fellows are also eligible for tuition reduction after six months’ employment.
