Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC)
In 2009, the Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC) at the University of Utah received funding from the Education and Community Involvement Branch of the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).
Goal
- Collaborate with diverse community organizations in the Salt Lake City area
- Facilitate dialogues about the connections between genetics and health.
The funding provided five mini-grants of $5,000 each for diverse community organizations; funding for two additional organizations was provided by the University’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Department of Pediatrics. Based on their applications, the following community organizations received mini-grants to participate in the project:
- Calvary Baptist Church-African Americans community
- 39th Chinese LDS Ward-Chinese community
- Hispanic Health Care Task Force-Hispanic community
- Indian Walk-In Center-Native Americans community
- National Tongan American Society-Pacific Islanders
- Native Research Network
- United Africans of Utah-African Immigrants

Community Advisory Boards/Projects
Couples-Based Diabetes Program (CBDP)
Katie Baucom (grant period 2018-2023)
- Community Advisory Board (CAB)
- Purpose: Assist Baucom in modifying Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) materials for couples to participate in the DPP together
- Timeline: Jan. 2019-Dec. 2020
- Attend once a month, 2-hour CAB meetings for 2 years
- Compensation: $150 per meeting for reading the assigned materials before each meeting, preparing feedback on the materials, and participating in person in the meeting
Time for Living and Caring
Becky Utz and Mike Caserta (grant period 2018-2023)
- Community Advisory Board (CAB)
- Purpose: Assist Utz & Caserta’s research team in developing an app or website that will assist caregivers in making best use of their respite time
- Timeline: Feb. 2019-May 2020
- Attend seven, 2-hour CAB meetings held over 16 months
- Compensation: $100 per meeting for reviewing materials before each meeting, preparing feedback on the materials, and participating in person in the meeting
