Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC)

In 2009, the Genetic Science Learning Center (GSLC) at the University of Utah received funding from the Education and Community Involvement Branch of the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

Goal

  • Collaborate with diverse community organizations in the Salt Lake City area
    • Facilitate dialogues about the connections between genetics and health.

The funding provided five mini-grants of $5,000 each for diverse community organizations; funding for two additional organizations was provided by the University’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Department of Pediatrics. Based on their applications, the following community organizations received mini-grants to participate in the project:

  • Calvary Baptist Church-African Americans community
  • 39th Chinese LDS Ward-Chinese community
  • Hispanic Health Care Task Force-Hispanic community
  • Indian Walk-In Center-Native Americans community
  • National Tongan American Society-Pacific Islanders
  • Native Research Network
  • United Africans of Utah-African Immigrants
